Introducing Matt Broschinsky
SUCCESS STORY OF THE WEEK
CONGRATULATIONS MATT!
During the summer of 2010, I had 2 different doctors tell me that my weight was affecting my health and ultimately my life span. My chiropractor told me that the curve in my spine was caused by my excessive weight and that it could not be resolved with chiropractic treatments, only massive weight loss could resolve the issue. My medical doctor told me that even though I didn’t have any glaring health issues now, he said he could almost guarantee that within 5 years I would be diagnosed with heart issues and diabetes if I didn’t make some serious changes. The ironic little cherry on top came from my oldest son though. One day he came to me and said, “dad, I want to grow up to be just like you one day.” Of course nothing could make a father more proud. He continued, “I want to have a great big tummy like you!" That killed me inside. I decided that day that I would be a better example to my kids and to those around me. I want to be known for my work ethic or happy attitude or sense of humor. I know I was “Fat Matt” in school but I did not want my kids to think that being overweight was something good to attain.
What changes physically/mentally/emotionally have you noticed?
Previously my lifestyle was a cycle of bad behaviors that promoted bad consequences that brought on feelings of depression which perpetuated the bad behaviors. Since changing my eating and exercise habits I am still in a cycle but it has reversed. Now, I enjoy the feeling I get from a good workout. As a result of eating a healthier diet and increased physical activity, I have noticed that my weight has dropped drastically which is always a happy feeling. In addition to that, I love to play with my kids and it makes me so happy to know that I can now play for hours with them and not get tired instead of playing with them for 4-5 minutes and then having to stop because I am out of breath. I actually bought a pair of pants the other day from the normal department store, not the big & tall store!!! All of this has encouraged me to keep going.
What are you doing for your exercise and nutrition program?
For the last year, I have completed the P90X workout program twice and the Insanity workout program once. As a change of pace, I am currently taking a Boot Camp class 3 days a week and the other 2 days of the week I workout at my local rec. center. Before I began this “journey” I only slept 2-4 hours a night. With the added amount of exercise that I get now, I HAVE to get 6-8 hours a night or I am just exhausted. I have since learned that quality sleep is extremely helpful in maintaining a healthy body so even when I don’t exercise, I make sure that I am getting plenty of rest. As far as nutrition goes, I reduced my calorie intake by cutting out the fast food and restaurant food that is packed full of junk. I was previously consuming between 3800 and 5000 calories a day. Now, I use Sparkpeople.com to track each calorie I take in and maintain no more than 1900 calories per day. 60% protein and then about 20% carbs and 20% fat. I also make sure that the carbs and fats that I eat are healthy like whole grains and fruits for carbs and lean meats, eggs and nuts for fats.
How did the Corporate Wellness Program help you?
This was a journey that I chose to make on my own. I realize that I have had good success but the information I have gained from the Corporate Wellness program has helped me to zero in on my goals and fine tune my routine so I get the most of out my nutrition and exercise programs. Along with this, being held accountable for attaining my goals helps a great deal and the Wellness program enables me to be held accountable.
What would you say to others who are considering joining the Corporate Wellness Program?
I would say do it. Plain and simple. To have someone who can act as a coach and cheerleader for your nutrition and fitness goals, a person will always be more successful. The Wellness Program provides participants with information and great resources for your personal fitness journey.
