New Years Resolution Time! Will You Stick With Your Goals?
It's that time of year! Dreams, wishes, hopes and desires come to the forefront of our minds. But how can you set goals you will stick with all year round?...especially those good old health and fitness goals.
Here are some tips from the American Psychological Association:
Start small - Set realistic goals that stretch you, but don't make you feel overwhelmed and want to quit. Achieving smaller goals can help build up your momentum to go on to bigger, harder tasks. Instead of totally doing away with the sweet stuff, the APA gives the example of setting a goal to replace dessert with fruit, maybe a few times a week? And is it really realistic for you set a goal to work out seven days a week? Instead of an all or nothing goal, maybe try a making a more sustainable change like three or four solid workouts per week.
Change one behavior at a time. - Sometimes setting too many goals can cause you to lose focus and make them more diluted. Prioritize your aspirations and focus all your energies on accomplishing the most important ones first.
Talk about it - Don't keep your goals to yourself! The more you publicize your goals, the more tangible they become and the more likely you are to follow through.
Don’t beat yourself up - Perfection is unrealistic. Be optimistic about your future success, but have a plan in place if you relapse or fall short. Roller coasters are normal. But a new day can mean a new start!
Ask for support - Social support could be the number one key to your success. Have your friends, family, and your wellness coach hold you accountable for achievement. Get a workout pal to keep you motivated all year round. Join a class. Have your family help you by only bringing healthy foods into the home.
And most importantly, write your goals down! An unwritten goal is only a wish. Put them in a place where you will read them often.
Remember, set SMART goals - Specific, Measurable, Action Orientic, Realistic, and Time Specific.
